The Royal Turtle is the royal reptile species of Cambodia. The sub-species Batagur affinis edwardmowli which only occurs in Cambodia in the Sre Ambel River. It is classed as Critically Endangered and is in the top 25 species of the most threatened turtle species in the world. At AWA we have a pair housed in our reptile house in agreement with the Fisheries Administration to try to breed more of these
extremely rare animals. Any offspring in the future will be head started in captivity before being released back to the wild.

Large turtle species weighing up to 35kg and capable of living over 75 years. Its diet is mostly aquatic
plants. It is nearly extinct due to sand dredging of its natural habitat, hunting for food and being killed in
fishing equipment such as nets.
