Empowering Communities Through Conservation Education
At Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium (AWA), conservation is more than protecting wildlife—it is about empowering people with the knowledge to live safely alongside nature.
In partnership with the Snakebite Relief Program (SRP), AWA was honored to conduct a Snakebite Awareness Training for the dedicated staff of the APSARA National Authority. As professionals working daily throughout the Angkor Archaeological Park and surrounding natural landscapes, APSARA personnel frequently operate in habitats shared with Cambodia’s native wildlife, including snakes.
This collaborative training aimed to improve public safety while fostering a deeper understanding of the vital ecological role that snakes play in healthy ecosystems.
Learning That Can Save Lives
The interactive workshop provided participants with practical skills and scientific knowledge, covering:
- Identifying Cambodia’s venomous and non-venomous snake species.
- Understanding snake behavior and their importance in maintaining ecological balance.
- Preventing snake encounters in workplaces and natural environments.
- Applying the correct first aid response during a snakebite emergency.
- Debunking common myths surrounding snakes through evidence-based education.
Participants also enjoyed engaging snake identification challenges, discussions, and real-life case studies that encouraged active participation and strengthened confidence in responding to wildlife encounters.
Changing Fear into Understanding
Many people instinctively fear snakes, yet most species are not dangerous and provide significant ecological benefits by naturally controlling rodent populations. Through education, participants learned that awareness, preparation, and respectful behavior are the most effective ways to reduce snakebite risks while protecting Cambodia’s biodiversity.
By replacing fear with understanding, communities become better equipped to coexist safely with wildlife while contributing to long-term conservation efforts.
